Did you know that today is World Mental Health Day?  The goal of the day is to raise mental health awareness and how we can all help take care of ourselves and those around us, especially as a staggering 1 in 4 people will experience a mental health problem in their life.

Mental health is being increasingly talked about in the workplace, in our schools and universities and in the community – The Duchess of Sussex recently said the world is facing a “consciousness crisis” when it comes to the issue of mental health.  

But the good news is that there is a lot you can do to look after your mental health from eating well to asking for help when needed.  You can also look after your mental health using exercise. Regular exercise can boost your self-esteem and can help you concentrate, sleep, and feel better. Exercise keeps the brain and your other vital organs healthy and is also a significant benefit of improving your mental health.

How can physical activity help my mental health?

There are many studies which have shown that doing a physical activity can improve mental health. For example, it can help with better sleep – by making you feel more tired at the end of the day & encourage happier moods. Physical activity releases feel-good hormones that make you feel better in yourself and give you more energy, managing stress, anxiety or intrusive and racing thoughts. Being physically active also gives your brain something to focus on and can be a positive coping strategy for difficult times

Advice for getting active:

• Start off with a goal in mind and break it down into small, manageable chunks.

• Write down the positive aspects of what you’re doing – like feeling more healthy or gaining confidence.

• Eat healthily – food with plenty of vitamins and minerals makes you feel better about yourself and gives you more energy

• Enjoy yourself – focus on your achievements and the way your mind and body are changing
