Men’s Health Week 2019

Men’s Health Week 2019, which runs from June 10th to June 16th, is all about raising awareness of preventable health problems among men and boys, as well as encouraging early detection and treatment of diseases and conditions.

Countries around the world have been using Men’s Health Week since 1994 to spotlight health issues particularly relevant to men, including mental and physical health. It is traditionally held in the run-up to Father’s Day.

The specific theme of this year’s national campaign is ‘Men’s Health By Numbers’ which aims to bring together the key numbers that men need to know to keep an eye on their health and wellbeing.

It is well-known that eating a healthy diet accompanied by regular exercise is essential in maintaining physical and mental health and well-being. But it is also important to understand your health.

Martin Tod, Chief Executive of the Men’s Health Forum said:

“Whether it’s targeted for treatments or percentages of patients, health care is drowning in numbers. Which ones really matter? For Men’s Health Week 2019, the Men’s Health Forum has pulled out the key numbers. We have seven numbers we want all men to know which can make all the difference.”

Key numbers for men:

37 – a waist size of 37 inches or above puts you at an increase of heart disease, diabetes and cancer.

150 – men should aim for 150 minutes of moderate physical activity a week.

5 – we should aim to eat 5 portions of fruit and veg a day.

14 – maximum of 14 units of alcohol a week.

10 – cigarette smokers die 10 years younger on average than non-smokers.

120/80 – normal blood pressure.

75 – 75% of suicides (3 out of 4) are by men.

Let’s hope that by knowing these numbers, we can all become more aware of our health and well being. .
