Let’s talk about Menopause!
Menopause is a fact of life for women, however, until recently, it was something that wasn’t talked about – even privately. For previous generations, it was never mentioned and was surrounded by embarrassment, even shame.
Thankfully, this has changed, we see empowering female celebrities openly discussing it and even the Government has been debating how best to support women going through the menopause. A real breath of fresh air.
Most women will experience some symptoms around the menopause. The duration and severity of these symptoms vary from woman to woman. The menopause can impact women’s mental as well as physical health
According to the NHS, about 8 in every 10 women will have additional symptoms for some time and these can have a significant impact on daily life for some women. Hot flushes, night sweats problems sleeping, headaches, low mood, anxiety, palpitations, joint stiffness, aches and pains and reduced muscle mass. Joy! The menopause can also increase your risk of developing other problems, such as weak bones (osteoporosis).
The good news is that exercising can help. Regular physical activity can help prevent weight gain, improve or preserve muscle mass, boost your mood and strengthen your bones which lowers the risk of fractures and osteoporosis.
Bone Health & Exercise
Weight-bearing exercises and resistance exercises are particularly important for improving bone strength and helping to prevent osteoporosis: Weight-bearing exercises are simply exercises where your legs and feet support your weight.
High impact weight-bearing exercises, such as running, skipping, dancing and aerobics are all great for strengthening muscles, bones and joints.
Resistance exercises are ones where you use your muscle strength to work against resistance. Examples include press-ups, exercising with weights or using weight equipment at a gym.
Do resistance exercises twice a week if you can.
