Children can bounce, bounce, bounce their way to fun and fitness
Wondering how to keep children entertained this weekend? Then look no further than our Get Bouncing play sessions this Sunday 22nd October at China Fleet Country Club, Saltash, Cornwall.
Our leisure Sports Hall will be transformed into a bouncy castle heaven with all different sized inflatables. Perfect for lively little ones who can just bounce, bounce, bounce their way to fun and fitness. Plus, as it’s inside, rain will not stop the play.
There really are not many children who don’t love a bouncy castle. But do you know how they were invented? According to the British Inflatables Hirers Association (yes, there really is an organisation for bouncy castles!) a NASA employee John Scurlock was a mechanical engineer who invented the safety air cushion used by fire and rescue teams when rescuing people jumping from heights such as buildings.
In 1959, Scurlock was experimenting with inflatable covers for use on tennis courts and swimming pools to protect them from the elements and he happened to notice his employees were having fun bouncing around on the cover. As he watched, he got the idea that children would enjoy bouncing around on something similar. He leased warehouse space in New Orleans and began manufacturing what he called Space Walks, a large air mattress specifically created for children. Later he added walls and a ceiling, and clear plastic windows and the business rocketed. After a name change, bouncy castles became known worldwide.
So, in the name of history…. if you do one thing this weekend, get bouncing at China Fleet!
