Game, Set & Match?

Wimbledon 2019 is upon us and with it, lots of strawberries and cream!

If you haven’t hit a tennis ball over a net since your school days, you really might want to consider picking up a racquet again – especially when you realise the huge range of health benefits of the sport. A recent study suggests that people who play racquet sports regularly may slash their odds of a heart attack or stroke.

Tennis, which ranks among the world’s most popular sports, provides an excellent full-body workout to increase fitness, plus other less obvious benefits including reducing stress, reducing loneliness, increasing bone density and increasing reaction times.

Tennis for Wellness

As well as a host of physical health and fitness benefits, regular participation in tennis has shown to have significant benefits on people’s mental well-being too. The positive links are so strong that the mental health charity Sport in Mind currently work in partnership with the NHS to support over 10,000 people with mental health problems and tennis is one of the core activities they deliver on a weekly basis.

Tennis for Life

As many tennis enthusiasts already know, the beauty of this sport is that you can play throughout your life no matter what your age or ability. There really is no age cutoff for playing tennis. You can begin as a kid or you can begin later in life, and you’ll enjoy it just as much.

Tennis for Brainpower

Tennis involves a certain creativity, tactical thinking and coordination of the body, and studies have shown that the relevant neural connections are enhanced in those who have played the game for years. To continue to play will actually improve brain function and aid memory and learning.

So dust off your racquet or use one of ours which are free to hire for members and hotel guests. Ok, you may not be the next Serena Williams or Novak Djokovic, but you’ll have lots of fun trying!

See you next week & see you on one of our tennis courts at the Club soon,
