Black Friday is back! Yes, that shopping bonanza of a day – often now spread out over a weekend – when retailers heavily discount and run sales… and consumers spend billions of pounds as a consequence.
It always falls after Thanksgiving Day in the US and signals the beginning of the Christmas shopping period.
However, have you ever wondered how Black Friday got its name?
Well there are a few theories but the main one is that this USA retail day first started being used in the 1980’s by retailers to refer to the single day of the year when retail companies finally go “into the black” (make a profit) after being “in the red” for much of the year.
However, another theory is that is was used by the Philadelphia Police Department’s traffic squad to describe the horrible traffic jams that happened when people poured into town on the Friday after Thanksgiving to go shopping.
Whatever the history of it is, Black Friday is now a firm sale in the UK too with over £7 billion spent each year. Though that’s small in comparison to the USA who spend around $850 billion!
We’re not the only country to follow the Black Friday tradition. After Canada who felt they had to run it in order to stop Canadians travelling to the US to buy deals, countries all around the world also run Black Friday deals including Brazil, India, France and Norway.
So in the name of Black Friday tradition…we’ve got some special discounts too!
Happy Black Friday – hope you grab a bargain or two.
