A Growing Appetite for Vegetarian Food

When I was growing up, I knew a couple of people who were vegetarian but it was still unusual and not really very mainstream.  I remember them complaining that there was so little on offer food-wise. Bland veggie lasagna or a larger-than-normal salad! Thankfully, things have changed a lot since then. Not only has the food on offer changed, but the reasons why people are making the switch to a more plant-based diet has changed too.

Many people are now ‘going veggie’ as a way to help tackle climate change or to help them become more healthy.  Some go vegetarian fully or a day a week, or just eat white meat, or fish or some go the whole hog (pardon the pun) by eating a vegan diet.

Personally, I do enjoy a diet full of lots of plant-based food but I also like to balance this out with the occasional meat or fish dish too. However, I am often tempted to ‘go veggie’ especially seeing so much about it in the media. Although I hate to jump on trends there is increasing evidence to show it is better for you.

Next week sees the start of National Vegetarian Week 2019 where the Vegetarian Society promotes the benefits of a veggie diet to both health and the environment.

Public Health England says it is important to eat a diet low in saturated fat and high in whole grains, fresh fruit and vegetables. As a vegetarian, eating a balanced diet based on whole grains, pulses (beans and lentils), vegetables and fruits, nuts and seeds you should easily exceed the guidelines for eating 5-A-Day and your meals will be naturally high in fibre and low in saturated fat.

Here at China Fleet, our Brasserie and Upper Deck Bistro both have a varied menu that’s updated regularly. Our food is freshly prepared by our in house chefs and features choices for all diets – vegan, vegetarian, low calorie or low carbs – and I can guarantee that we’ve more than just veggie lasagna!
