Pancake Day 2019!

Pancake Day falls on 5th March this year. Also known as Shrove Tuesday – it is the traditional feast day before Lent begins on Ash Wednesday.

Britons are predicted to tuck into more than 2.5 million pancakes in just one day. It is estimated that an impressive 52 million eggs are used in Britain each year on pancake day – that’s 22 million more than every other day of the year.

If you’re planning to make your own pancakes, see our China Fleet chef’s recipe below. Or, why not try ours? As well as being included in our breakfast menu, we will have some special savoury and sweet pancakes to enjoy in our brasserie available from 4th – 10th March.

Shrove Tuesday always takes place 47 days before Easter Sunday and was a time when Anglo-Saxon Christians went to confession to be “shriven” or absolved of their sins.

Nowadays, Pancake Day is a time to indulge on chocolate spread, lemons, sugar or more unconventional toppings. The origins of Pancake Day are steeped in history, with pancakes featured in cookery books as far back as 1439.

As well as cooking and enjoying pancakes, Pancake Races also take place all over England throughout Shrove Tuesday. The tradition is thought to have originated in Olney in the 15th century, after a woman lost track of time while cooking pancakes. When the bells for mass rang, she ran out of her house with the pan and pancake still in hand! Olney still holds a pancake race every year.
