Golf Fitness

Golf is played by over 55 million people, on 32,000 courses in over 200 countries worldwide.  Pretty staggering but even more so is the fact that all of these golfers could actually be substantially benefiting their health – living longer, healthier and happier.

The benefits have been known for many years, however, this has now been substantiated with several far-reaching studies now taking place. A new project aiming to assess the health and wellbeing benefits of golf was launched around the world over the past 3 years.  

The World Golf Foundation (WGF) a non-profit organization, helped coordinate the project and research how the game can benefit people’s’ lives.

They found that some of the key benefits of playing golf include improvements in life expectancy, around 5-7 years longer than non-golfers, quality of life and physical benefits. Golf is expected to decrease the risk of more than 40 major chronic diseases like type 2 diabetes, heart attacks, colon and breast cancer. Current research shows that golf has positive impacts on cholesterol, body composition, metabolism, and longevity.

The benefits aren’t only limited to physical health either, with psychological benefits including improved mood, reduced anxiety and increased confidence. Golf is also known to boost social connections and self-esteem.

During a typical single round of golf, players can walk for four to eight miles and take between 11,245 and 16,667 steps. Being a relatively low-intensity exercise, it means that enthusiasts can keep golfing for longer – way into old age – when more vigorous sports may be difficult.

I’ve not played too much golf personally but as I enjoy keeping fit, it is something I am now seriously considering.  My office has a beautiful view of the golf course and I have to say the players always look so happy and healthy!

Of course, there are times in the year when it may be too cold or too wet to get out to play as much as you want to.  However, as our Golf & Health Club monthly membership entitles you to use all health club facilities including the gym, racquet sports, swimming pool and spa, there’s no excuse to stop the exercise when the weather hits!
